As one of today’s most common cosmetic procedures, microdermabrasion is a must for anyone looking for an effective exfoliating facial. With the ability to address multiple skin concerns, microdermabrasion should be a staple treatment in every salon, spa, or dermatology clinic.
After its development in 1985, the Italian company Mattioli Engineering produced the first microdermabrasion machine to hit the global market. In 1986, skin care specialists throughout Europe began offering the treatment, popularizing it even before coming to the United States in early 1997. Not long after, the PowerPeel® Microdermabrasion System became the first to be cleared by the FDA. The first microdermabrasion machines only performed crystal microdermabrasion, however recent technological developments allowed for a new method called crystal-free microdermabrasion. Our versatile system features both crystal and crystal-free capabilities – a feature that isn’t seen in most other systems. Both types can help reduce the appearance of fine lines, hyperpigmentation, scars, and sun damage–so what’s the difference?
Our two-in-one PowerPeel® Microdermabrasion System allows users to switch between crystal and crystal-free treatments during one session if needed. The setting may fluctuate from client to client, so make sure that the system is set properly before every appointment. During a crystal microdermabrasion treatment, the PowerPeel® Microdermabrasion System blows ultra-fine crystals onto the surface of the skin through the connected hand piece to remove dirt and dead skin cells and reveal smooth, healthy, and glowing skin underneath. Our ultra-fine PowerPeel® Microcrystals are made from aluminum oxide and deeply exfoliate the surface layer of skin to stimulate a healing response that increases collagen production while removing dirt and dead skin trapped beneath the surface. Visibly fresh, healthy-looking skin can be achieved upon a client’s initial session, however, one treatment won’t be able to fully address other skin concerns. Crystal microdermabrasion helps collagen better target trouble areas and potentially improve their appearance over repeated sessions. This low-cost treatment is favored by clients and estheticians alike, offering more significant, long-lasting results.
Crystal-free microdermabrasion, or diamond dermabrasion, is an abrasive procedure that only requires the use of a diamond-tipped hand piece. It exfoliates by grafting or sanding the epidermis with a diamond-tipped wand before vacuuming away dirt and dead skin cells. Unlike crystal microdermabrasion, crystal-free is more cost-effective without the need to constantly restock materials. Diamond tips are durable and do not wear down or lose their effectiveness. The diamond-tipped wand included in our PowerPeel® System can be used on multiple clients as long as it’s thoroughly cleaned with an enzymatic solution between appointments. While this method can help to loosen and remove dead cells and targets the same skin concerns as crystal, it doesn’t offer a deep enough exfoliation to fully remove all skin imperfections. Without the ability to reach deep into the epidermis, crystal-free microdermabrasion is less effective at targeting and reducing the appearance of a client’s skin concerns.
Both methods are effective and can be used on all skin types, but if your clients are looking for the best results, crystal microdermabrasion is the way to go. Our PowerPeel® System is an affordable, user-friendly microdermabrasion machine that features crystal and crystal-free treatment abilities, giving users different options for clients to choose from when considering the cosmetic procedure.
